Chapter 1 : Six Powers of Making Thinking Visible
Week 6: Chapter 6
Chapter 6 : Using Thinking Routines for Maximum Effect
Chapter 6 helps us identify four key areas that will move our thinking routines from shallow routines that simply "check the box" to using thinking routines to maximize the power of making thinking visible. The four key areas are:
- Planning
- Priming
- Pressing
- Positioning
"In other words, during discussions or conferences, I find myself saying, "Oh, so you are making connections with...or "I notice that you are thinking of another way to see this.." Students are always thinking, but am I primed to notice it, name it. The expectation being: we think in here!"
Chapter 6 Reflection Tasks:
1. Which of the four key areas above do you need to be more intentional with to ensure that you aren't using thinking routines superficially but truly embedding them for the most effective use?
2. What is it about this key area that you find the most challenging?
Be sure to comment on another colleague's reflection!
