Chapter 1 : Six Powers of Making Thinking Visible
Week 3: Chapter 3
Chapter 3 : Routines for Engaging With Others
We were able to learn about 6 different thinking routines in Chapter 3. Each thinking routine had specific examples and visuals for us to see how this routine would play out in the context of our classrooms. All of these routines were great for engagement with others and collaboration among peers. These 6 thinking routines are:
- Give One Get One
- Ladder of Feedback
- Leaderless Discussion
- Sail: Speak-Ask-Ideas-Learned
- Making Meaning
- +1
"Like any tool, it is important to choose the right one for the job. If a hammer is needed a saw feels awkward and doesn't work very well. So what kind of thinking tools do we need? What kinds of thinking routines do we want to support our students with? If thinking routines are tools, What's in the toolkit?"
What tools would you like to add to your toolkit? The key is choosing the right one for the job! Thinking through the objective of the lesson, what kind of engagement and discussion to facilitate, and what kind of thinking you want to take place is important. Having this toolkit on hand will foster deeper learning and aid in making thinking visible in your classroom.
Chapter 3 Reflection Tasks:
1. Which of these 6 Thinking Routines sparked your interest?
2. Share an example of how you would use this Thinking Routine with your grade level/content area.
